Tango Contradictions: The Right Way

This past month we’ve been deep into our tango studies. We’ve been investigating the various right ways to do something. We know it can be frustrating when you go to one lesson and the instructor says never to do xyz. Then you go to another lesson and the opposite is emphasized to be true. This can even happen with the same teacher as you progress through their courses. It can be especially frustrating when starting out and you’re trying to understand what exactly is “the right way”. Well most of the time….. It depends. It depends on the situation, the music, your partner, your experience, the floor, the ronda, and where you are that day to name a few. In our lessons we try to emphasize that today this is what’s true to create some boundaries for the material we want to share. As we’ve gained more experience we’ve found that many aspects have a time and a place. We’re constantly adjusting to find the balance of contradictions within movements.

Our current focus is playing with the dynamics of the curve. How we can speed it up, slow it down, and stretch it.

Happy learning.
